How the Bleep Do We Create Our Reality?

We create the world around us from the mental constructions that are stored in our brain.

From the moment we wake up in the morning and look around, we start receiving an input through the senses, and processing it in our brain with the speed of light.

This is a wall, a chair, a table, a tree, a cat, a stranger, an old man, a beautiful woman, a nice day, my dog, your car, our world.

We don’t stop and consciously analyze why this is a stranger and that is my dog.

When we were little, we were oblivious to all those objects and subjects. We were asking questions, endlessly, until we had all the necessary information, to make sense out of this world.

We have millions of associations with all sorts of objects and subjects that are being mapped out and connected in our brain, thus giving us an outcome of our own “reality.” Subjective reality!

Our brain does the whole job in no time, literally.

This is cool! (smile) Right?

Not really, if we are stuck in this subjective reality and create the same world day after day –– a world that we are not happy with.

How can we be aware of this process that happens so fast that we don’t have a chance to spot it?

Choose one of the objects near you, any solid object. Try to be aware of the thought process that is happening in your mind while you are looking at the object and labeling it.

For example: “a chair”.

Try one more time. (smile)

Let’s leave the solid object alone, until the time when we are enlightened, or under the influence of hallucinogens. (smile)

Pick out any mental construction/belief of yours and do the same. You’ll find it impossible to witness the thinking process that supports the belief.

You can try to explain why you have a certain belief, by recalling the events from your past , but it is not the same as the original process that triggers the belief. It would be a conscious analysis of the belief, an interpretation of your logical mind.

The thinking process that supports a belief has been constructed out of many experiences from your past, and some of them, might have been irrationally interpreted . Hence, your logical mind would never even guess how your brain connected all those experiences , and what kind of "logic" it used to do so.

You’ll “see” only the final product of the thinking process: “marriage,” ”soul mate,” “life,” “sex is great,” “sex is dirty,” “I am not sexual,” and so on.

This is what ”being automatic” means. The thought processing is so fast that we are not aware of it.

To explain a certain belief, brain is using a mental map that connects many other beliefs that we have.

Trying to change even seemingly small belief may create the ripple effect in our brain. Our brain doesn't care about new knowledge that might enhance our behavior, all it cares about is a survival.

It is almost impossible to change our beliefs, let alone in a short period of time. Beliefs are transformed throughout our life under the influence of life experiences.

Realizing that, however, is a huge step toward self awareness.
